Abida’s kids too little to understand mother’s death, say ‘Mama has gone to Srinagar to buy winter jackets for us’

Splinter hit my wife in forehead, damaged her brain, she is a martyr: Husband in Shock

Bandipora, (TDD): A pall of gloom descended on the entire Naidkhai area of Bandipora district when the body of 45-year-old Abida reached her home.

On November 3, she had left home to get winter clothes for her children but hardly did she knew that she would return dead and empty handed.

As soon an ambulance carrying Abida’s body reached Naidkhai, her husband Zubair Ahmed, in a deep shock, yelled at people: “My wife is a martyr. Grenade splinter had hit her forehead and damaged her brain. She is a martyr. Kashmir isn’t safe for its own people. “

Abida was lovingly called Sumaiya at home in Naidkhai area of Sumbal in Bandipora district, where every eye was moist and every soul in a deep shock.

What added to the grief was Abida’s, a eight year old son, his 6 year old brother and the litte one, five year-old-daughter. These are the unlucky children for whom Abida wanted some winter stuff.

These siblings were unaware of their mother’s death. “Why are so many people coming to our house. Why is everyone crying,” the eldest one asked the mourners, who tried to console all three kids.

As the villagers gathered in large numbers outside the residence of Abida, the eldest kid says, ” My mama has gone to Sunday market Srinagar to buy winter clothes for me, my younger brother and sister. She promised me red colour jacket and long boot for winters. We need to wear winter clothes during snowfall. “

The village women hugged the three siblings repeatedly amid crie and sobs.

As the villagers flooded the house of slain Abida, the relatives of these ill fated kids were taken far from their single storey house so that they stay away from the shock of seeing their mother dead.

“These kids are too small to understand the meaning of death. What will we tell them, ” a wailing woman told amid tears rolling down on their faces.

On November 3, Abida had visited weekly Sunday market Srinagar to buy winter clothes for her children but little did she knew that she would return home dead and empty handed. She was seriously wounded in the grenade explosion and lost her battle with the life at SMHS hospital today afternoon. Twelve people were injured in the grenade attack including Abida. Three Lashkar-e-Toiba associates have already been arrested for being involved in the attack. The trio have been booked under UAPA and will now be charged for murder.(TDD)
