Amarnath Yatra: Solo Travel Banned, Only Road Convoys Allowed Amid Heightened Security

Diplomat Correspondent

Srinagar, (DD): In a significant move aimed at ensuring the safety of pilgrims, authorities have imposed strict travel restrictions for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra. Solo travel to the holy cave shrine has been completely banned, rail movement suspended, and only escorted road convoy movement is being permitted.

The decision comes in the wake of increased security concerns and intelligence inputs suggesting potential threats along the Yatra route. According to officials, all pilgrims must now travel in officially designated groups under the protection of armed security convoys, with no exceptions for individuals attempting solo or unregistered travel.

“Safety of the yatris is our top priority. Given the prevailing threat perception, these measures are necessary and non-negotiable,” said a senior officer overseeing the Yatra arrangements.

Train services to Yatra base points, including Banihal and Jammu, have been temporarily restricted for pilgrims, and those arriving by rail are being advised to switch to authorised road convoys. Security forces have been deployed in large numbers along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, as well as the Baltal and Pahalgam routes leading to the cave shrine.

This year’s Yatra, which officially began on July 1, has seen thousands of devotees register for the pilgrimage. Despite the tight security, the spiritual fervour remains high, with pilgrims expressing faith and cooperation in the government’s efforts to ensure a peaceful and smooth Yatra.

Authorities have urged all yatris to strictly adhere to guidelines, carry valid registration documents, and avoid venturing out of convoys under any circumstances.

The Yatra is expected to conclude on August 19, coinciding with the Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan.(DD)
