Amit predicts Water Metro as the future of transportation at National Urban Transport & Infra Summit 2025 at Kochi

Kochi (Kerala), DD, Amit Sharma, Secretary to the Government of Mizoram, Information & Communications Technology (ICT) Department and Director Census Operations & Citizen Registration, Mizoram predicted that Water Metro is the future of transportation systems during his special keynote address in Inaugural Ceremony of National Urban Transportation & Infrastructure Summit, 2025 held at Kochi.

Secretary ICT Mizoram Amit Sharma, who was invited as a keynote speaker at National Urban Transportation and Infrastructure Summit 2025 held at Kochi wherein he shared many experiences and exclusive contributions during his past tenures as Transport Secretary of UTs of Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir. He described Water Metro, which was launched about two years back by Prime Minister at Kochi as a great successful revelation and an innovative mode of transportation, which is connecting multiple islands of the city through it including historically most-famous Fort Kochi area which has significantly reduced the time and distance for the locals and tourists travelling in it.

During another Panel Discussion held during this day-long National Summit, Secretary Mizoram Amit Sharma laid special emphasis on the capacity building of Human Resources who are handling transportation sector to adapt their styles of working with Artificial Intelligence driven technologies. Chairman Kochi Metro Loknath Behara, CMD, Bharat Earth Movers Limited Sumanto Rao and lead speakers from Delhi Metro also participated with Amit in these sessions and appreciated his thought-provoking suggestions.

It was also shared during the Summit that waterways like Jehlum and Chenab in Jammu & Kashmir are well-suited for such Water Metro Projects and it was shared for delight of all that it is under active consideration to explore the possibilities of introducing same in these water bodies of J&K for the convenience of general public transportation here.

In the evening, Kochi Metro also organised a study tour-cum-trip of Water Metro for the visiting officers including Secretary Amit Sharma as their maiden exposure to this novel Metro in the waters which indeed inspired them to take this concept back to their respective states/UTs to introduce it there in future.DD
