Udhampur :TDD,Living in Nagolta hamlet in the Udhampur area of Jammu and Kashmir, Mohammad Rafiq is committed to maintaining the centuries-old craft of creating clay lights, or diyas. Using an ancient potter’s wheel, Rafiq continues to create these traditional lamps, a craft he learnt from his father and grandparents.
Rafiq’s potter’s wheel dates back to a time when craftspeople produced a variety of earthenware. However, this old craft has mostly been replaced by modern equipment. Rafiq is still dedicated to preserving this age-old art style.
“I learned this skill from my grandfather and father, and I want to carry on their legacy,” stated Rafiq. He clarified that his business is greatly boosted by the Diwali festival, when people look for traditional clay lamps for their festivities. Rafiq advised consumers to steer clear of Chinese-made goods and to support regional craftspeople.
“To commemorate Diwali, we Muslims make these lamps for our Hindu brothers and sisters. Our lamps are even used in temples,” Rafiq continued. “Seeing our items utilized at weddings and other important events brings us great joy. We encourage everyone to use locally produced goods and burn clay lamps this Diwali.TDD
