Imran Shah

Kishtwar, (DD): Panic has gripped Aliha village in Gandhari, Kishtwar, as a recent avalanche has put several houses at risk, forcing authorities to evacuate affected families. The region, known for its frequent avalanches, is facing yet another crisis due to heavy snowfall and unstable terrain.

According to local reports, more than 25 people remain in the village, while 5-6 houses are under immediate threat. The authorities have already shifted four families comprising 25 members to safer locations as a precautionary measure.

Villagers have expressed deep concern over the recurring avalanche threats. Ram sing, a local resident, said, “Every year, we live in fear during the winter months. The snow buildup is unpredictable, and when an avalanche strikes, we lose everything. The government needs to find a permanent solution for us.”

Another resident, Rakesh Kumar, who was forced to leave his home, shared his distress: “We had to evacuate in a hurry. It is heartbreaking to leave behind our homes, livestock, and everything we have worked for. We are grateful for the administration’s help, but we need better infrastructure and safety measures.”

Officials have assured that rescue teams are monitoring the situation closely and that affected families are being provided necessary assistance. A district official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, stated, “We are keeping a close watch on the area. More evacuations will be carried out if needed. Our priority is to ensure that no lives are lost.”

The administration has appealed to people in vulnerable areas to stay alert and report any signs of danger. Meanwhile, demands for permanent relocation or avalanche mitigation measures have gained momentum, as residents fear for their safety with every passing winter.(DD
