Bangus Valley to be developed as Offbeat tourist destination: CM Omar

Diplomat Correspondent

Jammu, (DD): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Wednesday that Bangus Valley in Kupwara will be developed as an offbeat tourist destination, focusing on eco-tourism and adventure travel.

Addressing the House, CM Omar highlighted the untapped potential of Bangus Valley, which remains largely unexplored despite its breathtaking alpine meadows, dense forests, and diverse wildlife. He emphasized that the government is committed to promoting tourism in lesser-known areas to boost the local economy while preserving the environment.

“Our goal is to develop Bangus as an eco-friendly destination without disturbing its natural charm. Sustainable tourism will create job opportunities for locals, including guides, pony owners, and artisans, while also attracting adventure enthusiasts,” he said.

Key Development Plans:

Infrastructure Improvement: Better road connectivity and eco-friendly stay options.

Adventure Tourism: Promotion of trekking, camping, and nature walks.

Cultural Integration: Showcasing local traditions, handicrafts, and cuisine.

Environmental Conservation: Strict regulations to prevent over-tourism and ecological damage.

A Hidden Gem in Kashmir’s Tourism Map

Located in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district, Bangus Valley is a pristine meadowland surrounded by pine and deodar forests. It is home to rare bird species and wildlife, making it ideal for nature lovers and wildlife photographers.

Tourism experts have welcomed the initiative, saying it could diversify J&K’s tourism sector beyond popular destinations like Gulmarg and Pahalgam. If executed effectively, Bangus Valley could emerge as one of India’s top eco-tourism destinations in the coming years.

The government is expected to roll out a detailed development roadmap in the coming months to ensure a balanced approach between tourism promotion and environmental conservation.(DD)
