Kupwara,(DD)Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today visited forward villages in Kupwara district affected by recent cross-border shelling, expressing solidarity with the affected families and assuring all possible assistance from the government.

Accompanied by top civil and police officials, the Chief Minister toured the worst-hit areas near the Line of Control (LoC), met with local residents, and took firsthand stock of the damage to homes, livestock, and agricultural land.

Speaking to reporters, the CM strongly condemned the unprovoked shelling from across the border and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to safeguarding civilian lives. “We stand by our people. Relief and compensation will be expedited, and necessary rehabilitation measures will be implemented at the earliest,” he said.

He also directed district authorities to ensure that temporary shelters, food supplies, and medical assistance are made available to displaced families, many of whom have been relocated to safer areas amid ongoing tensions.

The visit comes amid heightened ceasefire violations in north Kashmir, with locals urging both the state and central governments to bolster border infrastructure and build permanent bunkers in vulnerable villages.

More details are awaited as the administration prepares a detailed assessment report to be submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office for further action.(DD)
