CM Omar Abdullah Hopes for Early Resolution to Statehood Debate, Hails Rs 10,637 Cr Connectivity Projects in J&K

Diplomat Correspondent

Srinagar, (DD) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today expressed hope that the ongoing debate over the restoration of J&K’s statehood will be resolved soon. He also hailed the recent sanctioning of Rs 10,637 crore worth of 19 road and tunnel projects, calling them a vital step towards integrating remote and excluded areas with the mainstream.

Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Omar said, “The people of Jammu and Kashmir have waited long enough. I am hopeful that the matter of statehood is resolved soon, in line with the democratic aspirations of our people.”

He emphasized that while political empowerment is essential, development cannot be put on hold. “These sanctioned projects reflect the government’s intent to connect the disconnected and ensure balanced development across all regions,” he said.

Background: Statehood Issue in Focus Again

The demand for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood has gained momentum in recent months, especially with political parties, civil society groups, and residents voicing concern over the dilution of democratic rights post-August 5, 2019, when Article 370 was revoked and J&K was downgraded from a state to a Union Territory.

While the Centre has assured that statehood will be restored after elections and completion of the delimitation process, no concrete timeline has been given. Earlier this month, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated this stance in Parliament, prompting fresh calls from regional leaders, including Omar Abdullah, to expedite the process.

Development as a Bridge to Inclusion

The Chief Minister welcomed the Rs 10,637 crore infrastructure push, describing it as a “transformational investment” in the future of J&K. The 19 road and tunnel projects are aimed at improving connectivity in hilly, border, and underdeveloped regions, especially areas like Gurez, Karnah, Marwah, and other remote belts.

“We are committed to ensuring that no region feels left out. These projects are not just about roads — they’re about economic opportunity, access to education and healthcare, and social integration,” Omar stated.

Transparent Implementation and Monitoring

Omar also assured that his administration will ensure transparent implementation and strict monitoring of the sanctioned projects to prevent delays and cost overruns. “We have a responsibility to deliver on the ground, and we will make sure this opportunity is not wasted,” he added.

Final Appeal for Unity

Concluding his address, Omar appealed for unity and constructive cooperation among political parties and citizens. “The road to statehood and progress must be walked together — with honesty, commitment, and the shared goal of a stronger Jammu and Kashmir,” he said(DD)
