CM Omar orders crackdown on substandard meat; surprise inspections to Intensify

Srinagar, (DD): Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister has ordered an intensified drive against the sale of substandard meat and unhygienic food items, directing the Food Safety Department to launch surprise inspections across markets.

Chairing a high-level meeting on market regulation, the CM stressed that public health and consumer safety must take precedence over all other considerations. “There will be zero tolerance for any compromise on food quality,” the CM said, warning that offenders will face heavy fines, closure of businesses, and legal action.

Officials have been instructed to focus particularly on meat sellers, ensuring all products meet hygiene and quality norms. The CM also called for strong coordination between municipal bodies, police, and market regulators to sustain the crackdown.

Citizens have been urged to report any suspected cases of unsafe or unhygienic meat to the authorities.

The directive comes amid rising public concern over recent seizures of rotten meat in several districts, sparking demands for strict enforcement of food safety laws. The government says the fresh measures are aimed at safeguarding health and restoring confidence in local markets(DD).
