Srinagar, (DD): In a bid to boost high-value tourism and position Jammu and Kashmir as a premier destination for global events, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday chaired a key meeting of the Board of Governors of the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister stressed the importance of promoting Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism alongside cultural events, viewing both as crucial to diversifying the region’s tourism portfolio. He called for strategic efforts to make SKICC financially self-reliant and operationally sustainable, reducing its reliance on government support.

“Infrastructure upgrades and aggressive outreach are essential to elevate SKICC’s profile and attract large-scale national and international events,” the Chief Minister said, as per an official statement shared by his office.

The meeting also focused on revitalizing the cultural scene by hosting regular performances, festivals, and exhibitions that highlight the rich heritage of Jammu and Kashmir.

Located on the picturesque banks of the Dal Lake, SKICC has long served as a key venue for hosting high-profile conferences, including international summits, government conclaves, and cultural showcases. However, over the years, the facility has faced challenges related to maintenance, modernization, and underutilization.

With growing global interest in Kashmir as a safe and scenic destination, especially post the improved security and infrastructure scenario, the government sees renewed potential in tapping into MICE tourism—a sector known to generate higher per capita spending and longer visitor stays.

Wednesday’s meeting marks a renewed push by the administration to reposition SKICC not only as a business events destination but also as a platform for preserving and promoting Kashmir’s vibrant culture through regular events(DD)
