Poonch:DD, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday visited Kalaban village in Poonch district, which has been reeling under land subsidence for the past week, and assured full support to the displaced families.

Officials said that the village in Mendhar tehsil, close to the Line of Control, has been hit by land subsidence since September 11, affecting over 1,000 people and damaging more than 95 houses along with a graveyard and a mosque. Dozens of families have already been shifted to safer shelters.

Omar Abdullah reached the area by helicopter and inspected the sites where roads, houses, and other infrastructure had suffered extensive damage.
He was accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Ashok Sharma and local MLA and Minister Javaid Rana.

During his interaction with the affected population, the chief minister assured immediate relief measures and directed officials to ensure adequate boarding and lodging facilities for the displaced.

Kalaban is among 11 villages across Jammu, Ramban, Poonch, Rajouri, and Reasi districts that have faced land subsidence during the post-monsoon spell, leading to damage to over 200 houses and displacement of more than 3,000 people. (KNC)
