Dharamshala,(DD): As celebrations mark the 90th birthday of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama across the globe, including special gatherings in Tibetan communities, the spiritual leader has issued a heartfelt message, urging humanity to embrace compassion, warm-heartedness, and inner peace.
While acknowledging the widespread well-wishes and events being organised in his honour, the Dalai Lama described himself as a “simple Buddhist monk” who does not usually observe birthdays in a ceremonial manner. However, in light of the commemorations, he took the opportunity to share reflections on values he holds dear.
“While it is important to work for material development,” he said, “it is vital to focus on achieving peace of mind through cultivating a good heart and by being compassionate—not just toward near and dear ones, but toward everyone.”
The Nobel Peace Laureate expressed gratitude to those using the occasion to promote altruism and mental well-being. “By nurturing such values,” he added, “you will contribute to making the world a better place.”
His Holiness reaffirmed his lifelong commitments: promoting basic human values, fostering inter-religious harmony, preserving the Tibetan cultural heritage, and drawing global attention to the ancient Indian wisdom that explores the workings of the mind and emotions.
Drawing strength from the teachings of the Buddha and Indian masters such as Shantideva, the Dalai Lama once again invoked the verses that guide his spiritual journey:
As long as space endures,
As long as sentient beings remain,
Until then, may I too remain
To dispel the miseries of the world.
The message has resonated across continents, with Buddhist practitioners, peace advocates, and world leaders praising the Dalai Lama’s enduring voice for non-violence, empathy, and unity.
