Day 2: Ruckus in J&K Assembly Over Waqf Bill; NC’s Salman Sagar leads Protest, Demands Debate

Diplomat Correspondent

Srinagar,(DD): The second day of the ongoing Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly session witnessed high drama as uproar broke out over the proposed Waqf Bill, with members of the National Conference (NC) staging a protest inside the House.

Leading the charge, NC MLA Salman Sagar vocally opposed the bill in its present form, alleging that it lacked transparency and warranted broader consultation. Sagar demanded a detailed debate on the bill before its passage, insisting that the legislation had significant implications for religious and community affairs in the region.

Amid heated exchanges between treasury and opposition benches, Speaker had to intervene multiple times to restore order. NC legislators raised slogans and questioned the government’s intentions, accusing it of attempting to centralize control over Waqf properties without involving key stakeholders.

The protest disrupted proceedings briefly, but the Speaker assured the House that all concerns would be heard during the bill’s scheduled discussion.

The Waqf Bill, which seeks to restructure the management and regulation of Waqf assets across Jammu and Kashmir, remains a contentious issue, especially among opposition parties and community representatives(DD)
