Jammu :TDD,In a significant public health development, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a marked decline in dengue cases as temperatures drop across the Union Territory, with official records indicating 6,822 cases and one fatality reported in 2024. The Jammu district emerged as the epicenter of this year’s outbreak, accounting for 4,041 cases, significantly higher than neighboring districts.
The territorial distribution of cases reveals a distinct pattern, with Samba and Kathua districts recording 701 and 698 cases respectively, followed by Udhampur with 349 cases. The spread extended to other districts, with Rajouri reporting 192 cases, Reasi 348, Doda 215, and notably lower numbers in regions like Ramban (77), Poonch (78), and Kishtwar (26). The Kashmir region reported relatively fewer cases at 29, with 43 cases documented from other areas.
Historical data presents an interesting trajectory of dengue’s presence in the region. While 2022 saw over 8,000 cases with 18 deaths, and 2023 recorded over 6,000 cases with eight fatalities, previous years show varying patterns. The region experienced 1,709 cases in 2021, a dramatic drop to 53 cases in 2020 from 439 in 2019, and notable fluctuations over the past decade, with significant spikes in 2013 (1,837 cases) and minimal cases in several years between 2009 and 2014.
Currently, the healthcare system has managed 507 hospitalizations, with 492 patients successfully discharged and three remaining under treatment. Health officials emphasize preventive measures in the absence of a vaccine, advocating for environmental management strategies including proper solid waste disposal and regular maintenance of water storage units. They recommend comprehensive protective measures such as using mosquito nets, wearing appropriate clothing, and eliminating stagnant water sources that serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Medical experts continue to advise vigilance against common dengue symptoms, including fever, headache, eye pain, muscle and joint discomfort, and potential rash development. While the current decline in cases offers relief, healthcare authorities maintain that preventive measures and public awareness remain crucial in managing the seasonal health challenge.TDD
