Kargil: DD, The Director Sheep Husbandry Department UT Ladakh Dr. Iftikhar Hussain visited the Short-Term Training Programmed for Manufacturing and Weaving of Woolen Items being conducted for the Women Self Help Group (SHG) Baroo under the Integrated Wool Development Programmed (IWDP) 2025–26 Ministry of Textiles Government of India.
The visit aimed to boost the skills, knowledge and participation of women in wool processing and handloom weaving, thereby promoting self-reliance and sustainable livelihood opportunities in the region.
During the interaction Dr. Iftikhar Hussain encouraged the participants to adopt innovative and modern weaving techniques while maintaining the traditional essence of Ladakhi wool products.
He emphasized the importance of value addition, capacity building and women empowerment through such initiatives.
The trainees requested the Director to increase the duration of the training programme and also demanded the organization of field visits to other successful Women Self Help Groups for practical exposure and experience sharing.
The programme was also attended by Councillor Baroo, Advocate Khadim Hussain, District Sheep Husbandry Officer Kargil, Dr. Niaz ul Hasan, and Dr Niaz Ahmad Lone Assistant Director KSF and several officers and members of the Women Self Help Group.
Dr. Hussain appreciated the efforts of the organizers and participants for their dedication towards promoting traditional wool-based crafts.
He assured that the department will explore possibilities to extend training opportunities and facilitate exposure visits to further strengthen women’s engagement in the wool sector.DD
