Srinagar, Nov 02 (TDD): National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah today said he doubts the sudden spurt in encounters in J&K and demanded an independent probe to find out why gunfights have shown a surge post government formation in the UT.
Talking to a selected group of reporters at his Srinagar residence, Dr Farooq said: “I doubt these encounters taking place all of a sudden after government formation. Why there wasn’t spurt in gunfights before the government formation. There should be an independent probe to find out who is doing it,” Dr Farooq said, adding that the terrorists stuck in Khanyar area of Srinagar must not be killed and instead arrested.
“I urge the police to arrest the terrorists trapped in Khanyar area and investigate who is sending them and why. Terrorism was almost over and in Srinagar there were no terrorists,” Dr Farooq said, adding that “We need to know whether there is any agency involved to destabilise the Omar led government.”
He said things were calm in Srinagar as tourism was thriving and people were busy in their routine works. “We need to investigate why all of a sudden this spurt in gunfights,” he said.
