Dry weather likely to continue in J&K until Jan 12, Says MeT Srinagar

‘A feeble western disturbance to hit region on Jan 11’

The Diplomat Desk

Srinagar, (TDD): The Meteorological Department (MeT) in Srinagar has forecast dry weather conditions across Jammu and Kashmir until January 12, barring a very feeble western disturbance expected on January 11. According to officials, the disturbance is not expected to bring significant precipitation to the region.

This prolonged dry spell follows a period of cold wave conditions that have gripped various parts of the Union Territory, including the Kashmir Valley and higher reaches. The lack of wet weather could lead to a further drop in nighttime temperatures, potentially worsening the already harsh winter.

The absence of significant snowfall or rainfall during this period might offer some relief for commuters and residents in terms of daily activities, especially on major highways and roads that often get blocked during wet spells. However, experts warn that the continued dryness may also affect water availability in streams and reservoirs, which depend heavily on seasonal precipitation.

Residents are advised to prepare for extended cold conditions and to take precautions to protect themselves from the biting chill. Farmers and orchardists, especially in the Kashmir Valley, have also been urged to take necessary measures to protect crops from frost damage during this dry phase.

The MeT Department continues to monitor the situation closely and will issue further updates as the western disturbance approaches on January 11 (TDD)
