EIA Must for New Road Projects, Environment Should Be Top Priority: Hasnain Masoodi

Diplomat Correspondent

Jammu,(DD): National Conference (NC) leader and MLA Pampore today stresed on the necessity of conducting a mandatory Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) before initiating new road construction projects in Jammu and Kashmir. He asserted that development must not come at the cost of ecological damage and called for stringent measures to protect the region’s fragile environment.

Speaking to reporters in Jammu, Masoodi said, “Protecting the environment must be our first priority. Any new road construction must undergo a thorough Environmental Impact Assessment to ensure that it does not lead to deforestation, soil erosion, or harm to local biodiversity. Unregulated development could have irreversible consequences on the region’s delicate ecosystem.”

Masoodi pointed out that several infrastructure projects in Jammu and Kashmir have been undertaken without proper environmental safeguards, leading to deforestation, pollution, and disturbance of natural habitats. He urged the government to adopt strict environmental regulations, ensure sustainable development, and involve environmental experts in planning major projects.

“We must strike a balance between progress and conservation. Infrastructure is essential, but it should not come at the cost of damaging our natural resources. If environmental degradation continues unchecked, future generations will have to bear the consequences,” he added.

The NC leader called on the administration to take proactive steps in addressing ecological concerns, implement eco-friendly construction practices, and prioritize environmental sustainability in all future projects.(DD)
