Kathua,(DD): Tension gripped the Billawar area of Kathua district when an exchange of fire broke out between Army personnel and suspected terrorists, just a day before Republic day.

The incident occurred at 1:20 AM late last night near Panchayat Batod, under the jurisdiction of Police Station Billawar.

According to official reports, personnel from the 7 Sikh Li Regiment, stationed at TOB Moar, opened fire after noticing suspicious movement in the area. “The Army acted swiftly upon detecting the threat, and the suspects fired back. The exchange of fire lasted for about 30 minutes,” said a senior police official, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

The official added that no injuries to security forces were reported during the incident. “Combing operations are underway to ensure there is no further threat. Security has been heightened across the district, especially in light of the upcoming Republic Day celebrations,” he said.

The Army claimed that the suspects may have been terrorists attempting to infiltrate or conduct reconnaissance. The exact number of suspects and their identities remain unclear, and no recoveries have been reported so far.

This incident has sparked concern among locals and security agencies, as it occurred less than 24 hours before the Republic Day celebrations. The region has been placed on high alert, with intensified security checks and additional forces deployed to ensure a peaceful observance of the national event.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with the security forces. Further updates on the situation are awaited.(DD)
