Diplomat Correspondent

Anantnag, (DD) Anantnag Police on Sunday arrested a suspect wanted under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) with the assistance of a Facial Recognition System (FRS) deployed in the district.

According to officials, the individual—identified as Muneeb Mushtaq Sheikh, son of Mushtaq Ahmad Sheikh and a resident of Malik Mohalla, Drangbal Pampore—was detected at the X-Ray Point in Ganishbal, Pahalgam, using facial recognition technology installed by Jammu and Kashmir Police.

He was immediately taken into custody and shifted to Police Station Pahalgam for further verification. During questioning, it was found that Sheikh is wanted in connection with FIR No. 28/2021 registered at Police Station Pampore, involving Sections 16, 18, and 20 of the UAPA and Sections 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act.

Police officials said the prompt identification and arrest reflect the growing role of advanced surveillance systems in ensuring public safety and strengthening counter-terrorism measures.

“The successful use of the Facial Recognition System in this case highlights our continued efforts to enhance law enforcement through modern technology,” the statement added.

Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to leveraging cutting-edge tools to combat terrorism and maintain law and order in the region.(DD)
