Delhi, DD, On 05 August 1965, during Indo Pak War, Captain Chander Narain Singh, a brave young officer of Second Battalion The Garhwal Rifles, made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty while fighting the Pakistani infiltrators. For his exceptional courage, bravery and devotion to the Nation, he was conferred with “Maha Vir Chakra” India’s second highest gallantry award. On 5 August 2025, on the 60th anniversary of his brave act, a solemn military ceremony organised by 16 Garhwal Rifles was held at Dharamshala.
During the ceremony, Shri Sukhdev Singh brother of Late Capt Chander Narian Singh presented Maha Vir Chakra and other medals of the gallant officer to The Garhwal Rifles Regiment. The Maha Vir Chakra was received by Lt Gen DS Rana, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, SM, Ph.D. Colonel of The Garhwal Rifles & Garhwal Scouts and the Commander-in Chief Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN).
The ceremony was also graced by Lt Gen Rajan Sharawat, AVSM, VSM, GOC, 9 Corps, Brig Vinod Singh Negi, VSM, Commandant, The Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre, Col Vishal Kumar Singh, Commanding Officer 2 Garhwal Rifles, esteemed Veterans and serving Officers and troops of the Garhwal Rifles.
In his address, Lt Gen DS Rana, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the family of Capt CN Singh for presenting the medals and alluded that Capt CN Singh, MVC was true embodiment of courage, leadership and bravery and his legend will continue to inspire generations of Indian youth and future soldiers.
The medals will be displayed at the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre Museum, Lansdowne, Uttarakhand. This will serve as a source inspiration and will keep the legacy of Capt CN Singh alive in the heart of the Indian Army and the Nation for posterity.DD
