Forest Division Kargil celebrates Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas across district

Kargil, DD: The Kargil Forest Division observed Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas on Saturday with awareness programmes at Mulbekh, Sangra (Taisuru Block), and Abran (Zanskar).

The events focused on strengthening community–department collaboration for the protection, conservation, and sustainable use of juniper and role of Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs).

At Sangra (Taisuru Block) and Abran (Zanskar), the Department organized detailed awareness sessions on Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs), explaining their structure, objectives, and statutory responsibilities under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.

The sessions were attended by BMC members, Numberdars, VLWs, and local villagers. The Department also shared information on ongoing forest initiatives, community-oriented welfare schemes, and various conservation activities being carried out across the division.

A special talk was delivered on the importance of medicinal plants, highlighting their ecological value, livelihood benefits, and the rich traditional knowledge associated with them.

As part of the discussions, the crucial role of the traditional Amchi (Sowa-Rigpa) system of medicine was highlighted. Participants acknowledged the deep-rooted indigenous knowledge held by Amchi practitioners regarding local medicinal flora and emphasized the importance of protecting and promoting this heritage.DD
