Fresh snow, rains in Kashmir ends dry spell, revives water sources, boosts winter tourism

Diplomat Correspondent

Srinagar, (DD:The higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, including Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Zojila Pass, Gurez, Sinthan Top, Peer Ki Gali, and Razdan Pass, received moderate snowfall, while the plains experienced continuous rainfall, breaking the prolonged dry spell that had raised serious concerns over water scarcity in the region.

The prolonged dry weather had led to a significant decline in water levels in rivers, lakes, and springs across the Valley. Many perennial water sources had dried up, including the historic Achabal spring in Anantnag, which is a vital source of potable water and irrigation for thousands of residents. However, with fresh precipitation, the spring has naturally revived, bringing immense relief to the local population. Rivers, streams, and reservoirs across Kashmir have also witnessed a significant improvement in water discharge, easing fears of a potential drought in the summer months.

Meanwhile, Gulmarg recorded 2-3 feet of fresh snow, a much-needed development for winter tourism and sports enthusiasts. The lack of snowfall earlier this season had led to the postponement of the Khelo India 2025 Winter Games in Gulmarg, but with the latest snowfall, hopes have been rekindled for the event to be rescheduled soon. This will provide a boost to local businesses and the tourism sector, which had been struggling due to the dry winter.

The Meteorological Department has predicted more rain and snowfall over the next 24 hours, after which weather conditions are expected to stabilize. The rise in water levels and the renewed snow cover will also benefit agriculture, horticulture, and hydroelectric projects, ensuring a steady water supply for irrigation and power generation in the coming months.

The latest snowfall has not only ended the dry spell but also renewed hopes for a thriving tourist season, sustainable agriculture, and a stable water supply in the Valley.(DD)
