Fresh spell of rain, snow expected in J&K till March 3; travel disruptions likely: MeT

Srinagar, (DD): The Jammu and Kashmir is set to experience another round of rain and snowfall over the coming days, with isolated heavy snowfall in higher reaches, the Meteorological Centre Srinagar has predicted.

This could impact surface transportation in several hilly areas.

MeT forecast’ states that from February 26-28: Light to moderate rain/snow at most places, with isolated heavy snowfall in higher reaches of both Kashmir and Jammu divisions.

March 1-2: Generally cloudy with light rain/snow at isolated to scattered locations.

March 3: Light to moderate rain/snow expected at many places.

March 4-6: Dry weather likely across J&K.

Director MeT Srinagar, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, while commenting on the upcoming weather system, stated, “A fresh Western Disturbance is affecting Jammu and Kashmir, bringing widespread rain and snowfall. Higher reaches may witness heavy snowfall, which could lead to road blockages and disruptions in air and surface transport.”

He further added that temperature fluctuations are expected over the next few days, with daytime temperatures likely to drop significantly due to overcast conditions and precipitation. “We advise people, especially those in hilly areas, to remain cautious and follow official advisories,” he emphasized.

Surface transport disruptions expected over Sadhna Pass, Razdan Pass, Sonamarg-Zojila-Gumri axis, Mughal Road, Sinthan Pass, and other hilly routes.

Tourists, travelers, and transporters advised to check traffic updates before planning journeys.

Farmers urged to suspend irrigation and other agricultural operations due to expected rainfall.

Day temperatures likely to drop significantly during the forecast period.

The J&K Disaster Management Authority has urged residents to exercise caution, particularly in snow-prone areas, and follow official advisories. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will issue further updates as necessary(DD)
