Ghulam Hassan Mir Criticises NMC for Withdrawing Permission to SMVDIME to Run MBBS Course

Srinagar: Former Cabinet Minister and Apni Party Senior Vice President Ghulam Hassan Mir on Wednesday expressed serious concern over the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) decision to withdraw the Letter of Permission (LoP) granted to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) for running an MBBS course for the 2025–26 academic session.
The NMC reportedly withdrew the permission citing serious deficiencies in infrastructure, including inadequate faculty strength and insufficient clinical material, among other shortcomings.
In a statement, Ghulam Hassan Mir questioned the decision-making process of the regulatory body.
“The National Medical Commission must answer an important question—why was SMVDIME earlier declared eligible to function as a medical college, and why has it now been found ineligible, in a year’s time? Who will take responsibility for the suffering of the students who are now facing uncertainty?” he asked.
He further said that the authorities of SMVDIME must also be held accountable for the situation.
Mir strongly demanded that students who have recently been selected through NEET should not be made to suffer.
“These students must be accommodated without any difficulty. Arrangements should be made to place them in other medical institutions so that their academic future is not jeopardised,” he asserted.DD
