Govt Bans 25 Books in Jammu & Kashmir Over ‘Secessionist Content, False Narratives’

Move aimed at curbing anti-national propaganda; officials cite threat to public order and national unity

Srinagar, Aug 6(DD)
In a significant development, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has banned 25 books from circulation, citing their content as “false, seditious and secessionist in nature.” The decision was taken following a detailed review by security and intelligence agencies, which flagged the publications for promoting narratives that could incite unrest and disturb communal harmony in the Union Territory.

According to official sources, the banned books—written by various authors and publishers—allegedly contained misleading historical accounts, glorified militancy, and questioned the sovereignty of India over Jammu and Kashmir. The Home Department invoked relevant provisions under law to prohibit the publication, distribution, and sale of these materials within the region.

“These publications were found to be spreading misinformation, glorifying terrorism, and attempting to radicalise youth. Such content poses a serious threat to peace, public order, and the constitutional framework,” a senior official said on condition of anonymity.

The list of banned books has not been officially made public yet, but officials hinted that most of them were being circulated in academic institutions and local bookstores, especially in the Kashmir Valley. Law enforcement agencies have been directed to seize available copies and prevent further distribution.

The government’s move has drawn mixed reactions. While many see it as a necessary step to counter radicalisation and protect national integrity, some civil liberty groups have raised concerns over freedom of expression and the lack of transparency in the review process.

Meanwhile, education departments and libraries across the UT have been asked to ensure compliance with the ban. Authorities have also warned of strict legal action against anyone found distributing or possessing these banned publications.

This is not the first time such a step has been taken in Jammu and Kashmir. In the past, several publications and websites were blocked for allegedly promoting separatist sentiments and inciting violence(DD)
