Govt sanctions Rs 304 lakhs for purchase of 8 new vehicles for CM Omar in Delhi, J&K

TDD Correspondent

Srinagar, TDD,The government has approved a sanction of Rs 304 lakhs for the purchase of 8 new Toyota Fortuner vehicles for Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, intended for use in both Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir. The decision, made by the Transport Department, aims to ensure secure, comfortable, and efficient transportation for the Chief Minister, particularly given the demanding nature of his public duties in both locations.

The allocation of funds has attracted attention and sparked debate, especially considering the luxury nature of the vehicles and the significant cost involved. The decision comes at a time when there are ongoing discussions regarding government spending priorities in J&K, where critics have raised concerns about the allocation of funds for high-end vehicles when resources could be directed towards public welfare and infrastructure development.

The Tyota fortuner, known for its robust design and high-performance capabilities, is typically chosen for high-ranking government officials due to its durability and ability to navigate rough terrains, which is relevant for the diverse geography of J&K. The vehicles are expected to serve multiple purposes, including transportation for official duties, ensuring security, and offering convenience for the Chief Minister’s extensive travel.

While the move has been defended by those advocating for the protection and mobility of government officials, it has also drawn criticism for the optics of spending such a substantial amount on luxury vehicles during times of financial scrutiny (TDD)
