Jammu, DD, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today announced a comprehensive plan to develop Jammu as a major pilgrim tourism hub, aiming to enhance infrastructure and expand religious tourism circuits in the region.
Speaking in the Assembly, Omar Abdullah emphasized that Jammu receives millions of pilgrims annually, primarily visiting the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, but many do not explore other religious sites. “Our goal is to ensure that at least 10-15% of Vaishno Devi pilgrims also visit other spiritual and heritage destinations in Jammu, which will significantly boost the local economy,” he said.
To achieve this, the government is working on improving infrastructure, promoting lesser-known religious sites, and introducing structured tour packages. Under the Smart City projects, key sites will see enhanced connectivity, better amenities, and digital promotions to attract more visitors.
Omar Abdullah further stated that his government is committed to positioning Jammu as a premier destination for pilgrimage tourism. “We are not only improving existing facilities but also branding Jammu’s spiritual and historical legacy at national and international tourism forums,” he added.
This announcement comes as Jammu and Kashmir records a surge in tourist arrivals, with over 4.48 crore visitors, including a significant number of foreign tourists. The move to expand pilgrim tourism is expected to further strengthen Jammu’s position as a cultural and religious tourism hotspot.(DD)
