Srinagar, (DD) Gulmarg is all set to host the second leg of the 5th Khelo India Winter Games from March 9 to 12, after the event was postponed earlier due to inadequate snowfall, officials confirmed today.

The prestigious national-level winter sports competition will witness the participation of over 300 athletes from across the country, competing in a range of winter sports, including alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, ski mountaineering, and snowboarding. The event aims to provide a platform for emerging winter sports talent while boosting Gulmarg’s reputation as India’s premier winter sports destination.

Preparations in Full Swing

Officials said that infrastructure, logistics, and safety measures have been meticulously planned to accommodate athletes, coaches, and visitors. Special attention has been given to snow grooming and track maintenance, ensuring optimal conditions for competition.

“We have worked extensively to prepare the slopes and facilities, making sure everything is in place for the athletes. The focus is not only on hosting the event but also on giving the participants a world-class winter sports experience,” said an official overseeing the preparations.

Hoteliers and tour operators are witnessing a surge in bookings, with many expecting the event to attract domestic and international tourists. Local ski instructors and equipment rental businesses are also likely to see increased demand during the competition.

Anticipation Among Athletes

With just days to go, excitement is building among participants. Athletes, many of whom have been training in extreme conditions, are eager to showcase their skills on the slopes of one of Asia’s best skiing destinations.

“The conditions in Gulmarg are improving every day. We are hopeful that the competition will be tough, and we look forward to giving our best performance,” said an athlete preparing for the event.
