Gurez (DD)The annual Gurez Festival has once again become a major attraction, drawing large crowds from outside Jammu and Kashmir to the picturesque valley nestled in the high Himalayas. Organised by the J&K Tourism Department, the two-day cultural extravaganza featured traditional music, dance performances, local crafts, and adventure activities that highlighted the unique heritage and natural beauty of the region.
Tourists from states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi, and West Bengal were seen enjoying the scenic surroundings and engaging with the local community. The increased footfall has brought a welcome boost to local businesses and homestays, marking a positive trend in rural and border tourism.
“This place feels like a piece of paradise,” said Neha Mehta, a tourist from Mumbai. “The culture, the warmth of the people, and the untouched beauty of Gurez have left me speechless. I had never imagined such tranquillity existed in India.”
Rajat Bhattacharya, a traveller from Kolkata, added, “It’s not just the views that are breathtaking, but the vibe here is peaceful and energising. The festival gave us a unique insight into the local traditions.”
Many first-time visitors also expressed surprise at the infrastructure and hospitality in such a remote region. “We expected basic arrangements, but the hospitality exceeded our expectations,” shared Amit Desai, a tourist from Ahmedabad. “The cultural performances were a highlight — they reflected a rich history that deserves more national attention.”
Officials said the festival aims not only to promote tourism in the remote valley but also to give a platform to local artists and entrepreneurs. The administration ensured elaborate security and logistical arrangements to facilitate the smooth conduct of the event.
