Handwara Tragedy: Magisterial Probe Ordered, ex-gratia of Rs 1 lakh to families

Diplomat Correspondent

Srinagar, (DD): In the aftermath of a tragic road accident in Handwara, the government has ordered a magisterial inquiry and announced financial relief for the victims’ families. Two students lost their lives and 22 others were injured when a bus carrying college students overturned at Vodhpora while en route to a picnic.

Advisor to the Chief Minister, Nasir Aslam Wani, who hails from the area, described the incident as a personal loss. He visited the injured at Government Medical College and assured the public of immediate support and long-term improvements.

“The families of the deceased will receive an ex-gratia relief of Rs 1 lakh each, while severely injured individuals will be provided Rs 50,000. Others with minor injuries will receive Rs 25,000,” Wani stated. The financial assistance will be disbursed from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

He emphasized the need to strengthen local healthcare infrastructure, noting that Kupwara has lagged behind in the health sector. “We are committed to building facilities that eliminate the need to shift patients to Srinagar for specialized treatment,” he said.

Regarding infrastructure development, Wani confirmed that the Sopore–Kulangam road will be expanded into a four-lane stretch, improving safety and connectivity in the region.

A magisterial inquiry has been initiated to investigate the cause of the accident, and preliminary findings are expected to be released soon.(DD)
