Handwara,(DD): A college picnic turned into tragedy today when a bus carrying students overturned in the Vodhpora area of Handwara, claiming the lives of two female students and leaving at least 17 others injured.
According to officials, the bus was travelling towards Srinagar when the driver reportedly lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn. A total of 27 individuals, including students and staff, were on board.
“Two students died on the spot, while 15 others were admitted to GMC Handwara,” an official confirmed. “One critically injured student has been referred to a hospital in Srinagar for specialised treatment.”
Rescue teams, supported by local residents and police, arrived promptly at the scene and helped evacuate the injured to nearby medical facilities.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
The loss of Tabasum Mushtaq and her fellow student, both from Government Degree College Sogam, has triggered a wave of sorrow and condolences across Jammu and Kashmir.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep grief, stating on social media: “The loss of two young students in the tragic Handwara accident is devastating. My heartfelt condolences to their families. Prayers for the swift recovery of the injured. We are closely monitoring the situation and ensuring all necessary assistance.”
Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti shared similar sentiments: “Deeply saddened by the tragic deaths of two young students in Handwara. My heartfelt sympathies to their grieving families. May Allah give them strength during this unimaginably difficult time. Prayers for the recovery of all the injured.”
People’s Conference President Sajad Gani Lone expressed concern, saying: “A bus carrying students met with an accident near Vodhpora. Many have been injured, some critically. Some are being treated at GMC Handwara while others have been referred to GMC Srinagar. My thoughts and prayers are with all the affected students and their families.” (DD)
