Icy chill sweeps Kashmir, Ladakh; Jammu aees mixed temperatures

Srinagar Shivers at -3.3°C, Gulmarg Plunges to -9°C

Srinagar, TDD,A severe cold wave has enveloped the Kashmir Valley with temperatures dipping sharply, marking a frosty start to the day. The famed ski resort of Gulmarg recorded the lowest temperature at a bone-chilling -9.0°C, while Shopian (-7.5°C) and Sonamarg (-7.0°C) were also gripped by intense cold. Popular tourist destinations like Pahalgam (-6.8°C) and Pulwama (-6.7°C) are enduring severe frost, and even relatively milder spots like Srinagar and Ganderbal could not escape the freeze, both registering -3.3°C.

Other regions, including Kupwara (-4.4°C), Kulgam (-5.1°C), and Bandipora (-4.1°C), are also enduring subzero conditions. Notably, Larnoo recorded a biting -7.9°C, emphasizing the widespread cold across the Valley.

In the Jammu region, weather conditions varied greatly, with plains offering some relief while higher altitudes experienced icy conditions. Padder, at -7.5°C, matched Shopian in Kashmir for the coldest spot. Other hilly areas like Banihal (-3.1°C) and Bhaderwah (-1.2°C) also felt the winter chill.

However, the plains saw milder temperatures, with Jammu recording 6.5°C and Kathua at 7.0°C. Some areas, including Samba (2.3°C) and Udhampur (1.6°C), continued to feel the chill, with Ramban standing out as the warmest at 9.2°C.

In Ladakh, the cold was extreme, with Leh plummeting to an astonishing -12.8°C, the lowest temperature recorded across all regions, showcasing the harsh winter conditions that dominate the region during this season. (TDD)
