INDIAN ARMY COMMENCES MOUNTAINEERING EXPEDITION TO MAMOSTANG KANGRI, KARAKORAM RANGES

Diplomat Correspondent
Leh: DD, The expedition was flagged off from Leh by Maj Gen Dinesh Kumar Singh, Chief of Staff, Fire and Fury Corps.

A selected team of 12 expert climbers will attempt a perilous summit to the lesser explored Mamostang Kangri Peak over the next 20 days.

In an enthusiastic and motivating ceremony today, the Indian Army officially set in motion a challenging expedition to the Mamostang Kangri Peak located at an altitude of 7,516 meters in the remote reaches of the Rimo Glacier of the Eastern Karakoram Range.

It is the highest peak in the Rimo Muztagh subrange involving steep slope, glaciers, and treacherous climbs.

The intrepid expedition is in line with the Indian Army’s custom of undertaking tough operations with courage and spirit of adventure.
It serves a dual purpose of showing our presence and dissuading any misadventure by the adversary in the area.
Mamostang Kangri is amongst the few peaks in Ladakh region that exist above 7500 metres. Summit to the peak will subsequently attract avid mountaineers across the globe, thereby encouraging tourism in Ladakh.DD
