Indian Army Pays Tribute to 2nd Lt Ashok Prahladrao Mutgikar

Jammu : DD, The Indian Army today solemnly paid tribute to Second Lieutenant Ashok Prahladrao Mutgikar, 7 Grenadiers (now 9 Mechanised Infantry), who made the supreme sacrifice during the 1971 Indo-Pak War, displaying exceptional bravery and leadership in the face of adversity. The 1971 Indo-Pak War remains one of the most defining conflicts in modern South Asian history, leading to India’s decisive victory and the creation of Bangladesh. As a gesture of goodwill and patriotism, a war memorial was constructed at the border area of Gajansoo in the Marh District of Jammu by the locals at that time. Among the many key battles of the Western front was the fierce engagement in Chenab Enclave. where the Indian Army’s Chenab Brigade successfully captured Pakistan’s Phuklian Enclave. It was during this intense operation that Second Lieutenant Ashok Mutgikar displayed exemplary leadership, fearlessly leading his troops in combat, ultimately laying down his life in the line of duty. A commemoration ceremony was organized at the Shaheed Ashok Smarak in Village Gajansoo, Jammu, attended by family members of the war hero, senior Indian Army officials, and local dignitaries. The solemn occasion featured a wreath-laying ceremony, a memorial service, and a visit to the border areas, retracing the route that Second Lieutenant Mutgikar and his men traversed in the battle.

The event served as a poignant reminder of the courage and sacrifices made by India’s brave sons in defense of the nation. His sacrifice and unwavering determination remain a beacon of inspiration for generations of soldiers who continue to defend the nation with the same courage and conviction. During the ceremony, senior officers of the Indian Army, alongside veterans, local representatives including civil administration and school children, paid heartfelt tributes to Second Lieutenant Mutgikar, recognizing his unparalleled courage and devotion to duty. The wreath-laying ceremony was followed by a moment of silence as attendees reflected on the supreme sacrifice made by the young officer in service to the motherland. As part of the event, the officer’s family was also given a guided tour of the border areas, retracing the battlefield where he fought gallantly. This symbolic journey provided a powerful connection between history and the present, allowing the family to witness firsthand the terrain and challenges that their loved one faced.

The Indian Army remains steadfast in its commitment to honouring the legacy of its fallen heroes, ensuring that their sacrifices are never forgotten. The courage displayed by Second Lieutenant Mutgikar and countless other brave hearts during the 1971 Indo-Pak War stands as a testament to India’s unwavering resolve to protect its sovereignty. The event concluded with a renewed pledge by the attendees to uphold the ideals of service, sacrifice, and patriotism that these brave hearts stood for. The Indian Army salutes its brave heroes and their families, expressing deep gratitude for their sacrifices in defending the nation.
