Indian Army Rescues Rare Pangolin at LoC Post in Akhnoor, Hands It Over to Wildlife Department

Diplomat Correspondent

Jammu, (DD): In a commendable display of environmental responsibility, the Indian Army rescued a rare pangolin near the Line of Control (LoC) in Akhnoor sector of Jammu and Kashmir. The endangered animal was found by troops of the Gigrial Battalion while on routine duty at a forward post.

Upon discovery, the army personnel ensured the creature was unharmed and immediately contacted the Wildlife Department. The pangolin was safely handed over to the department for further care and rehabilitation.

Officials said the timely intervention by the Indian Army not only ensured the safety of the rare species but also reflected the Army’s commitment toward preserving local biodiversity, even in high-tension border zones.

Pangolins, often dubbed the world’s most trafficked mammals, are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act in India and are listed as endangered due to rampant poaching and habitat loss.

Wildlife officials have lauded the Army’s swift and sensitive action and confirmed that the rescued animal is now in safe custody and will be released into its natural habitat after necessary observation.

This incident highlights the Indian Army’s ongoing efforts in promoting conservation and supporting civil administration beyond their core duties of national security( DD)
