Indian Battalion Celebrates Medal Day Parade in UNIFIL with Grandeur and Dignity

Diplomat Correspondent

UNIFIL HQ, Lebanon,DD, The Indian Battalion currently deployed under the banner of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) marked a significant milestone today by hosting its Medal Day Parade, a formal ceremony honoring the service and dedication of its peacekeepers. A total of 821 Indian Army personnel were awarded the prestigious United Nations Medal for their exemplary commitment and contribution to peace and stability in the region.

The parade was led by Lt Col Vikas Sheoran, who commanded the ceremonial proceedings with precision and dignity, exemplifying the high standards of military leadership within the Indian Army.

The concept of the Medal Day Parade was introduced by the United Nations as a ceremonial tradition to recognize peacekeepers who complete a minimum of 90 days of continuous service in a UN mission area. Over time, it has evolved into a symbol of professionalism, commitment, and shared values among the international peacekeeping community. In UNIFIL, this tradition is observed with pride and respect, reinforcing the unity of effort among troop-contributing countries and the host nation.

The event was graced by an esteemed array of dignitaries, including HE Mr Mohd Noor Rehman Sheikh, Ambassador of India to Lebanon, the UNIFIL Sector East Commander, and a wide spectrum of civil and military guests, notably the Mayor of surrounding villages, representatives from the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), State Security, General Security, and several key appointments from local community leadership and government departments.

The strong presence of civil representatives symbolized the deepening cooperation, mutual respect, and enduring bonds between the Indian Battalion and the local Lebanese communities—a reflection of India’s longstanding commitment to global peacekeeping and diplomacy.

The highlight of the ceremony was a display of exceptional military drill and precision, showcasing the professionalism, discipline, and coordination that the Indian Army is globally renowned for. The meticulously conducted parade not only reflected the high training standards of the contingent but also stood as a proud testament to India’s military ethos.

The Medal Day Parade served not only as a platform for recognition but also as a valuable opportunity for military leaders to engage with various Lebanese civil authorities and departmental heads, further strengthening mutual understanding and operational synergy between UNIFIL and local institutions.

As one of the largest troop-contributing countries to UN peacekeeping missions, India’s role in UNIFIL continues to set benchmarks in professionalism, humanitarian outreach, and civil-military cooperation.DD
