Jammu, DD: In a rare weather event, Jammu City has recorded 190.4 mm of rainfall within 24 hours (till 8:30 a.m.), making it the second-highest August downpour in nearly a century, as per independent weather monitoring platform Kashmir Weather.

The all-time highest August rainfall for the city remains 228.6 mm, recorded on 5 August 1926. The previous second-highest mark of 189.6 mm, logged on 11 August 2022, has now been overtaken.

Independent weatherman Faizan Arif, who runs Kashmir Weather, described the event as “a remarkable climatic occurrence, underscoring both the intensity and variability of monsoon systems in the region.” He added, “Jammu’s 190.4 mm rainfall in just 24 hours is not only historic but also a reminder of how extreme weather events are becoming more frequent in recent decades.”

The heavy downpour triggered waterlogging in several parts of Jammu city, disrupted road traffic, and caused inconvenience to commuters during the early morning hours. Officials have advised residents in low-lying areas to remain cautious as more showers are expected in the coming days.

Arif further noted that climate variability and urban expansion often amplify the impacts of such extreme rainfall. “While this record is meteorologically significant, its consequences are felt most at the ground level where drainage and infrastructure are put to the ultimate test,” he observed.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted intermittent moderate to heavy showers in parts of Jammu division over the next 48 hours, urging authorities to stay on alert for possible flash floods and landslides in hilly terrains(DD)
