Jammu-Srinagar National Highway Shut Down Amidst Heavy Snow and Landslides

Arun Jasrotia

Udhampur :DD, Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has been forced to close, causing significant disruptions to travel, due to a combination of heavy snowfall and dangerous landslides. Reports indicate that substantial snow accumulation between Ramsoo and Qazigund has rendered that section of the highway impassable. Simultaneously, the area between Nashri and the NAVYUG Tunnel is experiencing a barrage of shooting stones, landslides, and mudslides, further exacerbating the situation.
The impact of this closure is substantial, with a large number of vehicles, including essential trucks, passenger vehicles, and buses, now halted at Jakhani in Udhampur. Traffic authorities have taken decisive action, preventing any vehicles from proceeding beyond Jakhani due to the hazardous conditions and the complete closure of the national highway. This has resulted in a significant buildup of stranded vehicles, creating logistical challenges for both travelers and those responsible for transporting goods.
Adding to the already challenging circumstances, the Udhampur region has been experiencing persistent rainfall for the past three days. This prolonged period of rain has likely contributed to the increased risk of landslides and mudslides, further destabilizing the already fragile terrain along the highway.
Authorities are working to clear the highway, but the ongoing weather conditions are hampering their efforts. Travelers are strongly advised to avoid attempting to travel on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway until further notice. Updates will be provided as soon as the road is deemed safe for passage.DD
