Jammu’s Message to India: Humanity Defeats Hate, Brotherhood Outshines Injustice

Jammu has once again reminded the nation of its timeless identity—a land of harmony, compassion, and shared brotherhood. Known as the “City of Temples,” Jammu is not defined merely by its religious heritage but by the spirit of coexistence that binds its people together. This is the same soil where stories of “the lion and the goat drinking from the same well” have long symbolized unity and peaceful living. In recent days, that same spirit surfaced again in the most powerful and humane manner.

The demolition of journalist Arfaz Ahmad Deng’s house by the Jammu Development Authority (JDA) left many shocked and disturbed. Arfaz, his elderly parents and his young children were forced under the open sky—an unimaginable ordeal for any family. His charges that he was targeted for exposing local issues, including recent drug recoveries, sparked debate about whether the action was fair, transparent, and humane. Regardless of the administration’s justification, the act exposed lapses within the governing system and raised concerns about selective action and bureaucratic insensitivity.

Yet, amid this darkness, Jammu lit a beacon of hope—one that rekindled faith in humanity. When a Hindu resident, Kuldeep Kumar, stepped forward and gifted a 5-marla plot to the displaced Muslim journalist, it became far more than an act of charity. It transformed into a powerful statement against hatred, division, and prejudice. Kuldeep’s words—“Even if I have to beg for funds, I will rebuild your home”—echoed across communities as a resounding affirmation of unity. His gesture was not only touching but a direct answer to those who attempt to divide people on religious or communal lines.

The civil society of Jammu, too, rose with unprecedented solidarity. Political leaders, social activists, labour unions, and ordinary citizens visited Arfaz, expressing support and condemning the injustice he faced. The message from Jammu’s society was clear and unambiguous: If administrative wrongs can isolate a man, the people of Jammu will stand beside him as one collective family.

This united response is not accidental—it is rooted in Jammu’s cultural and moral fabric. Time and again, the city has demonstrated that it will not allow hatred to overshadow humanity. This episode became yet another reminder that Jammu’s heartbeat is stronger than any divisive force.

The political reactions also highlighted the seriousness of the situation. From opposition voices calling it “bulldozer injustice” to leaders warning of administrative arbitrariness, the event triggered a wave of accountability demands. But more importantly, the public reaction surpassed political boundaries and brought forth an emotional, human reaction—a reminder that societies, not systems, ultimately safeguard justice and dignity.

Kuldeep Kumar’s gift of land to Arfaz stands today as the most beautiful symbol of Jammu’s soul. It has, in essence, delivered a loud and clear message: Humanity lives here. Brotherhood thrives here. Love will always outlive hatred.DD
