Kargil: DD, The Wildlife Division Kargil, in collaboration with local community representatives, celebrated Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas today at Rangdum. The event aimed to honour the rich tribal heritage of the region while highlighting the importance of conserving its unique natural ecosystems, particularly the high-altitude wetlands.

A key highlight of the programme was an informative session by wildlife staff, who spoke on the critical role wetlands play as the “lungs of the Earth.”

He explained that wetlands act as natural filters, improving water quality by trapping sediments, pollutants, and excess nutrients. Emphasising their ecological value, that wetlands regulate water flow, support rich biodiversity, and protect surrounding landscapes from environmental degradation.

The wildlife team urged the community and authorities to work collectively toward conserving these fragile habitats, stressing that “protecting wetlands today ensures the survival of future generations and sustains the ecological balance of the region.”

During the event, staff from the Wildlife Division Kargil held an open interaction with residents of Rangdum. Local grievances related to wetland protection, wildlife movement, and associated issues were heard in detail.

The Division assured the community that their concerns would be addressed through coordinated efforts involving community participation, and sustainable management practices.

The programme concluded with a pledge to strengthen conservation initiatives while preserving the cultural identity and environmental legacy of Rangdum and its surrounding landscapes.DD
