J&K Government Constitutes District-Level Committees to Prevent Student Suicides

Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has constituted a five-member committee, headed by the Deputy Commissioners, to work on the prevention of student suicides.

As some cases were reported following the declaration of examination results in the recent past, the Government has taken serious note of the situation. Accordingly, it has ordered the constitution of district-level committees to monitor, oversee implementation, conduct inspections, and receive complaints regarding mental health protection and the prevention of suicides among students.

“In pursuance of the directions passed by the Supreme Court of India in Criminal Appeal No. 3177 of 2025 (arising out of SLP (Crl) No. 6378 of 2024), titled Sukdeb Saha vs. State of Andhra Pradesh and Others, sanction is hereby accorded to the constitution of District-Level Monitoring Committees, comprising five members (headed by the Deputy Commissioners of the respective districts), to oversee implementation, conduct inspections, and receive complaints regarding mental health protection and the prevention of suicides by students,” the order stated.

As per the orders issued by the General Administration Department, J&K, the Deputy Commissioner will serve as the chairperson of the committee. Other members will include the Chief Education Officer, Chief Medical Officer, District Social Welfare Officer, and a representative from civil society to be nominated by the Deputy Commissioner.

The committee will conduct periodic inspections, examine and address complaints regarding mental health protection, and ensure preventive measures against student suicides across all educational institutions within the district.

On January 16, 2026, a female student allegedly committed suicide in Rajouri District’s Kotranka area. According to media reports, she took the extreme step after failing in one examination in Class 10.

In another incident, a 12th-class student from Doda District’s Paryote allegedly ended his life after the declaration of board exam results. Reports claim he could not clear the Economics subject.DD
