Jammu, (DD): In a decisive move to address the escalating traffic challenges in its twin capitals, the Jammu and Kashmir Government has established a Multi-Disciplinary Committee dedicated to the comprehensive review and enhancement of the traffic management systems in Jammu and Srinagar.
The committee, chaired by the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir, comprises senior officials from key departments, including Home, Housing & Urban Development, Transport, Public Works, and Tourism. Representatives from the police, municipal corporations, and national highway authorities are also integral members, ensuring a holistic approach to the issue.
Mandated with the task of formulating detailed traffic management plans, the committee’s focus areas include:
Enforcement of Lane Discipline: Implementing strict measures to ensure orderly vehicular movement.
Congestion Mitigation: Addressing traffic bottlenecks in high-density areas through strategic planning.
Technological Integration: Adopting Intelligent Traffic Management Systems (ITMS) for real-time monitoring and enforcement.
Infrastructure Development: Expanding road networks, enhancing pedestrian pathways, and developing efficient parking solutions.
Regulation of Street Vendors: Organizing vending zones to prevent obstructions and ensure smooth traffic flow.
A significant emphasis is placed on accident prevention, urban planning, and the timely completion of Smart City projects that influence traffic dynamics. The introduction of dedicated e-bus services is also on the agenda to provide sustainable public transport alternatives and reduce vehicular congestion.
To ensure consistent progress, the committee is scheduled to convene monthly, with the Housing and Urban Development Department providing necessary support. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to creating safer and more efficient urban mobility solutions for its citizens. (DD)
