J&K Govt Firm on Housing Policy for Kashmiri Migrants, No Revisions Planned

Diplomat Correspondent

Jammu, (DD): The Jammu and Kashmir government has ruled out any reconsideration of its housing policy for employees appointed under the Prime Minister’s Package for Kashmiri Migrants.

Responding to a query by MLA Mir Mohammad Fayaz, the Department of Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation & Reconstruction (DMRRR) stated that 6,000 one-bedroom flats (1-BHK) were sanctioned under the 2015 Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP) at 20 locations. The project’s initial cost of Rs 920 crore has since been revised to Rs 1,325.84 crore.

The government clarified that 2-BHK flats were permitted at Sheikhpora and Vessu following directives from the then Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, with the Union Territory government covering the additional costs as per instructions from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Amid concerns over inadequate accommodation, the government confirmed that no proposal to revisit or modify the existing housing policy is under consideration.(DD)
