Srinagar,(DD): The Jammu and Kashmir government has informed the Legislative Assembly that 83,742 domicile certificates have been issued to individuals from outside the Union Territory over the past two years.
The information was provided in a written reply to a question raised by MLA Waheed Ur Rehman Para during the ongoing session. According to official figures, a total of 35,12,184 domicile certificates have been issued across J&K during this period.
Of these, over 83,000 were granted to non-locals—individuals who were not permanent residents of the erstwhile state prior to the abrogation of Article 370.
The data has sparked renewed discussions on the broader demographic and political implications of the domicile law, which was introduced following the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019.(DD)
