J&K Police Registers First-Ever e-FIR via WhatsApp, marking a milestone in digital policing

Diplomat Correspondent

Srinagar, (DD) In a major step towards modernizing law enforcement, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered their first electronic First Information Report (e-FIR) based on a complaint lodged via WhatsApp.

The landmark development took place at Vilgam police station in Handwara, following a complaint from Imtiyaz Ahmad Dar, a resident of Hanjipora, Kupwara, and a driver for the State Road Transport Corporation.

According to the complaint, Dar was traveling from Tarathpora to Srinagar when, upon reaching Vilgam, he was allegedly restrained and physically assaulted by two individuals, Ashiq Hussain Bhat and Gowher Ahmad Bhat of Shehnipora, Vilgam. The accused reportedly caused him physical injuries.

Acting swiftly, Vilgam police registered the e-FIR under sections 115(2) and 126(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

This pioneering move underscores the increasing integration of technology into law enforcement, making justice more accessible and efficient in Jammu and Kashmir.(DD)
