J&K Transport Commissioner fixes E-Rickshaw fares, mandates meters for auto-rickshaws

Diplomat Correspondent

Srinagar, (DD): In a significant move to streamline public transportation in Jammu and Kashmir, Transport Commissioner Vishesh Paul Mahajan today announced new measures aimed at regulating fares, enhancing road safety, and addressing public grievances.

Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, the Commissioner stated that the fare for electric rickshaws has been fixed at Rs 10 per kilometer per passenger, applicable for a maximum distance of 6 kilometers. Additionally, all auto-rickshaws have been mandated to install meters, with strict action promised against those found overcharging passengers or operating without valid permits.

“Drivers hold primary responsibility for ensuring road safety,” Mahajan emphasized, urging them to strictly adhere to traffic norms, avoid speeding, and always wear helmets. He stressed the critical role of drivers in preventing accidents and ensuring commuter safety.

Addressing the ongoing delays in issuing driving licenses, the Commissioner assured that the issue would soon be resolved. “A new tender for license printing is almost finalized, and licenses will be delivered by post in the near future,” he said. Meanwhile, he encouraged drivers to use the Digilocker app for accessing their licenses digitally.

Mahajan also called on citizens to follow designated routes and reassured them of measures in place to ensure public safety. “We are committed to creating a safe and reliable transportation ecosystem for everyone,” he added.

These steps are expected to bring much-needed regulation to the region’s transportation sector, benefiting both commuters and drivers.(DD)
