J&K’s Future Lies in Hands of Young Scientists: CM Omar at SKUAST-K Convocation

Srinagar, (DD): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today emphasised the critical role of young scientists in shaping the future of Jammu and Kashmir, stating that the agriculture sector is not only the backbone of the region’s economy but also central to its culture and identity.

Speaking at the 6th Convocation of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K), the Chief Minister said over 70 percent of the population is directly or indirectly dependent on agriculture. He added that the vision for transforming the sector draws inspiration from the ideals of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah and is now reflected in the university’s laboratories and classrooms.

Highlighting SKUAST-K’s contributions to research in temperate horticulture, sustainable farming in high-altitude regions, animal husbandry, and organic agriculture, Omar said, “These graduates are not just receiving degrees—they are becoming grassroots problem solvers.”

He noted that traditional agriculture can no longer meet future challenges such as climate change, land degradation, and market unpredictability, especially as the younger generation seeks opportunities for growth and innovation.

The Chief Minister outlined several reform initiatives led by the administration, including the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP)—a ₹5,000 crore mission that integrates science, finance, and governance to build a high-value, technology-driven agriculture ecosystem.

He said 29 major projects are currently underway, focusing on areas like high-density apple and walnut plantations, sheep husbandry clusters, saffron revitalisation, and the development of new agribusiness models. The government, he added, is working in close partnership with scientists, entrepreneurs, and farmers to modernise dairy operations, promote precision farming, and improve post-harvest processing.

Addressing the graduating students, Omar said this was their moment and their field to lead. “The government’s mission is to empower young aspirations. Support has already been extended to hundreds of startups in food processing, agri-tech, dairy, and horticulture. Those who come forward with ideas and business plans will find institutional support,” he said.

He called the graduates “torchbearers of change” and encouraged them to be bold in their vision, urging them to build startups, work with farmer groups, and leverage technology to digitise extension(DD)
