A small hike was acceptable, but doubling the price is unbearable: Residents
TDD Correspondent
Srinagar, TDD,The recent doubling of the price of Kashmiri “Kandur Roti,” a staple bread in the Valley, has caused widespread concern among both bakers and residents, especially those from low-income groups.
Traditionally sold at Rs 5, the roti is now priced at Rs 10, making it difficult for many to afford, particularly during the harsh winter months.
Sofi Abdullah Majeed Pampori, president of the Kashmir Bread Makers and Bakers Union, defended the hike, citing rising costs of ingredients like ghee and flour. “After months of discussions, we had no choice but to increase the price. The decision was necessary to address operational expenses and has been communicated to the authorities,” he explained.
For many, however, the sharp rise has been overwhelming. Kulsum Jan, a resident of Beerwah, lamented, “We can’t afford to spend Rs 50 for five rotis, which earlier cost just Rs 25. A small increase would have been understandable, but this is too much.”
Sajad Ahmad from Srinagar voiced similar concerns, saying the hike is unaffordable for many who earn just Rs 200 to Rs 300 a day. “This price increase has hit us hard, especially in winter. The government needs to step in and set a fair price,” he urged.
The community is now calling for government intervention to regulate the price of this essential food item, fearing that basic necessities like bread could soon become out of reach for the poorest. (TDD)
