Karnah to Be Developed as Major Tourist Hub, Govt Plans Pilgrim Facilities at Sharda Temple

Jammu, (DD): The Jammu and Kashmir government has unveiled plans to develop Karnah Constituency in Kupwara district as a key tourist destination, emphasizing its picturesque landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and strategic location near the Line of Control (LoC).

Replying to a query by MLA Karnah, Javid Ahmad Mirchal, the Tourism Department acknowledged that villages like Teetwal, Karanoo in Nawagabra, and Budnambal hold immense potential for nature tourism, adventure tourism, and cross-border heritage tourism.

As part of these efforts, the government has proposed the construction of a Yatri Niwas, a cafeteria, and improved facilities for pilgrims at the historic Sharda Temple in Teetwal.

“Sharda Temple holds deep cultural and religious significance. The upcoming Yatri Niwas and other amenities will boost pilgrim tourism and attract visitors from across the country,” the government stated, adding that the enhanced infrastructure would provide better accommodation and services for pilgrims visiting the revered site.

Officials believe that developing Teetwal as a heritage tourism hub could also encourage cross-border cultural exchanges and create new economic opportunities for locals. The region, historically linked to the ancient Sharda Peeth pilgrimage route, has long been a place of spiritual and cultural importance.

Apart from pilgrimage tourism, the government is also looking at adventure and eco-tourism opportunities in Karnah, given its lush green meadows, pristine rivers, and snow-capped mountains. Adventure activities such as trekking, camping, and nature walks are being explored to attract more visitors.

This initiative is part of a broader plan to diversify Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism sector, moving beyond traditional destinations like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg. The government is focusing on lesser-explored regions to bring economic growth to remote areas and provide employment opportunities to local communities.

With improved road connectivity and tourism infrastructure, Karnah has the potential to become a major attraction for travelers, adventure seekers, and pilgrims in the coming years.(DD)
